A Lead Is Judged in Your Hand, Not on the Shelf

You hold it for the whole walk, and that is the part people forget while they are choosing a colour. A lead that looks smart in a photo can still saw across your fingers the moment your dog spots a squirrel. Really there are only two decisions worth making here: what the lead is made from, and how thick it is.

Leather set or braided rope

The Leather Collar Leash is a matching collar and lead, heavily stitched, and you can have your dog's name or your phone number added to the collar. Leather starts firm and softens with use, taking the shape of your grip. It suits the same route, most days, on pavements and through the park. The Nylon Leash is braided climbing rope with a metal hook at the dog end. This is the wet morning, muddy field, leave-it-in-the-car option. Thickness matters more than you would expect

The Nylon Leash runs to 150 cm in every width, so on that one length is not the variable. The rope comes in five diameters, from a slim 0.6 cm to a substantial 1.6 cm, and that is where the real choice sits. Pick by pull, not by weight. A calm large dog who walks at your knee is happy on something thin. A small determined one who lunges at every cat needs a rope you can close your hand around. Go too thick and your dog carries dead weight all walk.

Three Checks Before You Commit

Hold the handle: wrap it round your hand once. If it bites while you are standing still, it will bite properly at a lunge.

Look at the clip: it is the heaviest part and the first thing to wear out. It should swing freely without knocking against your dog.

Measure the neck: two fingers should slide comfortably under a collar. Use a tape rather than guessing from your dog's weight.

Five Minutes of Care, Several Extra Years

Leashes fail slowly, and always in the same places. Wipe leather down when it comes in wet, dry it away from the radiator, and condition it a few times a year. Rope needs warm soapy water and a line dry. Once a month, run your fingers along the stitching and give the hook a firm tug.
