Which carrier should I pick for my dog — the backpack or the cross bag?

Start with your dog's weight. The Carrier Backpack is the roomier of the two: Small takes 0-5 kg, Medium 5-10 kg and Large 10-13 kg, and its product page recommends it for pets up to 13 kg (around 28 lb). The Carrier Cross Bag is for the smallest passengers, in two sizes listed at 22×31 cm and 25×37 cm. Read its weight limit carefully — the size options are labelled 3 kg and 5 kg, while the description on the same page gives about 8 lb (3.6 kg). The two don't agree, so go by the lower figure and message us if your dog is near that line. Above 13 kg neither bag is right: the Cross Bag is made for small dogs and cats, the Backpack for small to medium dogs and cats, not big breeds.

Can my dog get out of the carrier while I'm walking?

Both carriers have an internal safety buckle designed to stop your dog jumping out mid-walk. On the Carrier Backpack that buckle clips onto your dog's collar or leash; the Cross Bag's is built into the bag itself, alongside magnetic clasps and ring buckles. The Backpack also has a head-out opening with a zip and elastic band, so your dog can look around with their shoulders still inside, and it can be worn on your front or your back with an extra belt to keep it steady. Both use breathable mesh to keep air moving on warm days. No carrier is escape-proof, though, so keep a hand nearby with a wriggly dog.

Do I need the water bottle, the collapsible bowl, or both?

It depends on how you travel. The Portable Dog Water Bottle carries the water with it — press the button, the trough slides out, and whatever your dog doesn't drink draws back inside rather than onto the pavement. It has a built-in charcoal filter, and a treat compartment in the base on the "+ Feeder" versions only, so choose one of those colours if you want it. The Silicone Collapsible Bowl holds no water of its own, but it folds flat, clips to a collar, leash or backpack, and comes in 350 ml and 1000 ml with a slow or normal feeding option — handy to keep in the car. Plenty of people carry both.

How fast does it arrive, and what if the carrier doesn't fit my dog?

Orders go out within 24-48 hours, and every shipment is tracked. Delivery usually takes about seven days, though it can stretch to 45 depending on where you are and how long local customs take. Shipping is free on orders over $100; below that it's calculated at checkout. If the size isn't right, you have 30 days from receipt to return the carrier unused and in its original packaging — send us a return request with your order number and we'll come back with a return authorisation number and instructions. Once it's inspected, approved refunds go to your original payment method within 7-10 business days, with shipping costs deducted.

Most days out with a dog go wrong in the same small way. You reach the far end of the park and the one thing you needed is on the kitchen worktop. Water, usually. Travel kit is never the exciting part of the shop, but it decides how the day goes.

Judge by weight, not breed: what matters is the load you will still be happy carrying an hour in.

Air and a view: dogs settle faster when they can see out and feel moving air, so check the mesh first.

Practise at home: treats, an open bag on the floor, short indoor trips. Never let the first ride be the one that matters.
